Challenge: The IFC World Bank needed a diagnostic survey to identify the unique challenges faced by female DFS agents and merchants in Northern Nigeria, an area with historically limited access to financial services.
Solution: CPPL conducted a comprehensive survey across nine northern states, engaging directly with female DFS agents and merchants to gather data on their challenges. The study aimed to inform strategies to enhance these agents’ effectiveness and sustainability, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s DFS ecosystem.
Key Findings:
- Access to Financial Resources: Female agents struggled to obtain the capital needed to grow their businesses.
- Cultural and Gender Barriers: Cultural norms restricted women’s mobility and economic participation.
- Technological Challenges: Unreliable internet connectivity and lack of modern digital tools posed significant barriers.
- Training Needs: There was a demand for more targeted training programs to help agents navigate the complexities of the DFS market.
