Effective Business Writing and Communication Skills & Business Growth -

Business guru, Peter Drucker feels very strongly about communication in the business arena. He says, “As soon as you move one step from the bottom, your effectiveness depends on your ability to reach others through the spoken or the written word”, referring to the corporate ladder. Driving it home, he says, “As soon as you move one step from the bottom of the management ranks, your effectiveness, and performance, will strongly depend on your abilities to reach and influence others through the power of your spoken and written words”.

Thomas Jefferson, the third POTUS, also said, “The most valuable of all talents is that of not having to use two words when one is sufficient”. These are men who have excelled in business and governance. This simply means that until you have mastered communicating in the business space, your chances of real success are limited.

This is amazing, very interesting, and life-changing. One would think that understanding the technicalities of your trade, good business prowess, and a good network is all one needs to succeed in the marketplace. However, that is not the case. I see it happen every day in the corporate and commercial space. The strong executors are not necessarily the stars. The brilliant young men and women, who will communicate effectively get all the accolades. They speak up boldly, present ideas, proffer solutions brilliantly, and get all of the accolades. They may not be the best executors, but they get their voices and ideas across very confidently and clearly when and where it matters. That is what we refer to as communicating effectively.

We have too many young people who just do not understand how important it is to communicate well. It is not surprising that employers of labor complain so much about the quality of graduates emerging from today’s Nigerian universities. There is nothing in the school curriculum that addresses this skill. That is why they can barely communicate appropriately, in writing or verbally. They enter into the workforce ill-equipped for the tasks ahead.

Where does that leave the employer of labor? Nobody is willing to take chance on this incompetent army of young job hunters. Their overseas counterparts, on the other hand, are preferred simply because they come with great communication skills. Some feel it is about having foreign accents, but it goes way beyond that. The First World University curriculum demands a lot of writing and presentation. It is inherent in the learning process.

Where do we go from here? If the local universities are not equipping the students adequately, the onus lies with the corporate world to provide this highly needed skill. Effective Communication is taught. No one is born with adequate communication skills. As passionate, seasoned, and deeply experienced business trainers, our mandate is to equip professionals to excel in the corporate space. We, Customer Passion Point Limited (CPPL), decided to attempt to bridge this gap by developing our Effective Business Writing and Communications Training Program.

We wanted to teach young professionals how to communicate effectively in the corporate space. Our promise to them and their employers is that it would improve employability, productivity, effectiveness, and collaboration in the overall business space. The intention of the Effective Business Writing and Communications Training Program is to highlight the basic rules of communication in today’s dynamic work environment.

Since 2017, we have had over 200 young professionals pass through this program. The response is always very motivating. They come in feeling very corky and sure of themselves, they leave humbled, having learned so much. The curriculum is loaded to thoroughly equip anyone who attends the Program to communicate verbally or non-verbally, as the business occasion demands.

We are particularly thrilled that this four-module program has been well received.

It has impacted many young professionals’ confidence as it concerns expressing themselves through the written or spoken word. Our recent corporate training class with the latest set of management trainees in AXA Mansard Insurance PLC, Nigeria (a very popular organization in Nigeria) was really exciting.

First, the class was filled to its brim, with brilliant, motivated, highly ambitious, self-opinionated young professionals. As usual, they were all curious. However, their curiosity was tinged with the attitude that they did not see why they should be in the class. By the time, we began to point out the issues, we could feel their attention piqued. Suddenly, we had their undivided 100% attention

What is special about the CPPL Business Writing and Communication Training Program?

We make them understand that effective communication is the bridge between, their current positions and their desired professional future. The learning and conversation become more interesting from the moment they understand this fact. We then teach several writing rules and the fundamentals for writing and communicating effectively.

By the time we introduce practice exercises, we engage the learners to use the guidelines in correcting the passages. A typical example: “It is my objective to utilize more fully and satisfactorily, both my university educational experience and my skills as an editor, preferably in a full-time employment position with your firm”. We also had presentation group assignments. Each group had the task of presenting to top management, the need for all graduate trainees to attend the Effective Business Writing and Communications Program.  The practice exercises drove our message home.

Learning without practice is in vain and ineffective. There is no point in teaching, so many relevant rules in grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation without putting it all to the test. Usually, they groan and complain but eventually correct the sentences. They take the practice tests with a growth mindset. The focused tenacity is inspiring.

One of them said this in the feedback survey; “I will never communicate the way I currently do. I am bad, I will communicate well, and if and when I am already good, I will communicate better”.

And this is our scorecard. It simply says to us at CPPL “FULFILLED — MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”.

For us at CPPL, our major objective with our Effective Business Writing and Communications Training Program is to get the learners to:

    • Communicate effectively using different relevant media within the business environment.
